This is a 72" heavy duty tapered handmade Hickory Wooden Bo Staff. The Bo Staff is a traditional Okinawan training tool used in Kobudo style martial arts such as karate or Aikido. This particular staff is 1.25" in diameter. They are tapered to approximately 1" at the tips.
As the tapered version varies thickness towards the ends, this allows for more speed and maneuverability in kata and technique. I recommend for kobudo and contact as their weight thickness, maneuverability and material make these the perfect companion for such dojo uses. However, they are also ideal for home and practice use. This is the standard heavy duty Bo size which I recommend for contact training in dojos.
Due to the tapering, I do not suggest these staffs or any staffs that are tapered for hiking purposes. The reason for this is that as you hold the top of the staff, you are holding what feels like an upside down cylindrical pyramid, and it will feel like it wants to slip from your hands. If you would like a more appropriate but still heavy staff for hiking I recommend the Hickory 1,1/8 Untapered Staff here.
The materials consist of laminated hickory. Hickory is the hardest available North American Hardwood and is excellent for all uses. In particular these staffs are made from beautiful southern shagbark hickory which is amongst the strongest hickory species.
The lamination of two pieces of hickory also makes this staff stronger as the different grain orientations reinforce each other, and the glue joint is permanent and stronger then the actual grain of the wood itself. The lamination also serves the purpose of keeping the wood straight over time as it will resist warping more then solid hardwood.
Hickory comes in two colors. Light sapwood, and light brown to darker brown heartwood. Some staffs have different colors of hickory laminated together. This is called Calico Hickory, and you commonly see it in hard wood hickory floors for extra beauty. As each staff is completely unique, the colors and patterns in the wood is different for each staff. The differences in color is purely aesthetic in nature.
Each staff is finished with several coats of Linseed and Beeswax oil and sanded to a fine finish, which gives it a permanent shine and and amazing feel in the which allows the hands to slip effortlessly up and down the staff.
