This is a handmade solid Ipe Bo Staff.
The Bo Staff is a traditional Okinawan training tool used in Kobudo style martial arts. The traditional length for a full length bo staff is 72". Its diameter is 1 inch through out its length.
Ipe is normally a very hard exotic heavy wood. However in the classification of Ipe there can be many different species. Every once in a while I come across ipe wood that is lighter then average. These staffs are not for contact and are for someone who wants a beautiful dark staff that can be used with more speed. These are excellent for hiking too as they are easier to carry.
All these staffs are under 1 lbs and 15 ounces. They are still much heavier then most woods and compare to hickory. But still are lighter then average ipe.
Ipe is normally twice as hard as common American Hickory. I have found these lighter weight staffs are somewhat more brittle then standard ipe. These staffs are typically a little lighter in color as well coming out still very dark but a medium brown. Every staff is different amd yours will be unique. The pictures are only examples.
It is sanded smooth and finished with several coats of Linseed and Beeswax oil, which gives it a permanent shine and protective layer while allowing the users hands to slip effortlessly up and down the staff, which is required for proper technique.
