This listing is for Purpleheart/Hickory Deluxe laminated handmade Wooden Jo Staffs. The Jo Staff is a traditional Okinawan training tool used in Kobudo style martial arts. These particular staffs are 54 inches in length.
The materials consist of beautiful exotic Purpleheart on either side and a strip of heavy white hickory down the center for added straitness and effect. Hickory is the heaviest available indigenous north american wood. Purpleheart is a well known exotic hardwood coveted by many martial artists for its beauty strength, weight, hardness and impact qualities. The laminations of the various woods increases the strength of the wood by having the grain structures reinforce one another.
Purpleheart is naturally purple. And it becomes a darker shade of purple overtime.
The purpleheart staffs in the pictures are shown both unoiled and oiled as that is the natural sheen of the wood. With oiling they will become a very dark purple color as shown in the pictures. On each staff is applied several coats of Linseed and Beeswax oil which gives it a permanent shine and protective layer while allowing the users hands to slip effortlessly up and down the staff, which is required for proper technique.
