This listing is for Hickory/Ipe Deluxe handmade Martial Arts Wooden Bo Staffs. These particular staffs are a constant 1.25-inch diamater an come untapered. The Bo Staff is a traditional Martial Arts Training tool used in Kobudo styles of Karate. These particular staffs go from a size of 60" to 72" inches in length maximum.
These staffs are the thickest size available on our website and are also the strongest. The materials consist of Southern Shagbark hickory on either side and an extremely heavy darker Ipe wood down the center for added straightness and beauty and weight. Hickory is the heaviest available indigenous north American wood. Ipe wood is twice as hard as ipe on the wood hardness scale. The laminations of the various woods increase the strength of the wood by having the grain structures reinforce one another.
This Bo staff is recommended for all possible dojo uses as it is stronger than even solid hickory. It combines the best impact qualities of hickory with the extra heft and weight from of ipe in the center of the staff. It is about the toughest available and this combination of woods and is a beautiful and functional combination. They are the highest quality bo staffs I make, and they are amazing for any use including kata, dojo use, and tournament use due to its inherent beauty.
*For the staffs labeled discounted, occasionally staffs have slight character marks, or places where there are non straight grain sections. These staffs may not be appropriate for contact, but are perfect for all other uses. These staffs are as heavy as the regular staffs and are beautiful as well. I have discounted these staffs 20$.
Hickory can in several different colors. Some come in lighter tan sapwood colors, light brown or darker brown heartwood, or sometimes a mixture of both dark and light on the same stick called 'calico hickory'. These variations are aesthetic only and do not affect the integrity of the wood at all. The pictures are purely generic in nature and the staff you receive will be unique to that particular wood.
It is finished with several coats of Linseed and Beeswax oil, which gives it a permanent shine and protective layer while allowing the users hands to slip effortlessly up and down the staff, which is required for proper technique.
