These are limited edition rare exotic wood Bubinga staffs. Bubinga is also called African Rosewood due to its beautiful rose colored sheen. Bubinga is a hard heavy exotic wood comparable to hickory in hardness. These staffs come in various sizes. All are 1" in diameter and their lengths range from 36" to 72". You may see what is available in the variations.
Bubinga is considerably harder then American Hickory. It has an amazing smooth sturdy feel. It has a beautiful dark reddish color.
I have a limited supply of these so these may not always be available.
When testing the wood, it seemed more brittle then either hickory or ipe, so it may not be suitable for contact. However, as I do not sell this wood that often, I do not have extensive experience with Bubinga's qualities. To me they are more of a staff with a good solid feel and a beautiful reddish hue. It is up to the user to research and decide whether they should be used for contact in this case.
*Update, bubinga straightens fairly easily, on par with ipe. So I am not as concerned with brittleness as I once was. However again, I do not have expertise in using this wood in the dojo so I can not recommend a particular use. I always err on the side of caution and therefore do not recommend these for contact. I am selling these purely on the beauty and weight of the wood. if you have more info or experience using these staffs for karate, I would love to hear and learn more about this beautiful wood, as my specialty and knowledge is not in Bubinga.*
It is sanded smooth and finished with several coats of Linseed and Beeswax oil, which gives it a permanent shine and protective layer while allowing the users hands to slip effortlessly up and down the staff, which is required for proper technique.
