This listing is for a Purpleheart Wooden Jo Staff. This is an upgrade to a common bamboo or rattan staff. The Jo Staff is a traditional Okinawan wooden self defense weapon used in Kobudo style martial arts. These particular staffs are 48-54 inches in length. These staffs have a constant diameter of 1" 1,1/8" or 1,1/4" throughout its length.
1" Is the standard thickness for a martial arts staff and is excellent for kata and demonstration. 1,1/8 gives it a heavy feel which can still be used with some speed, and 1,1/4 is for the heaviest applications.
The materials consist of purpleheart wood which is one of the most beautiful exotic woods. Its hardness is comparable to hickory and has a beautiful natural dark purple color. These staffs may either be made from Solid hardwood construction or laminated construction, depending on the availability of wood and wood quality.
It is finished with several coats of Linseed and Beeswax oil, which causes the purpleheart to have a rich dark purple color. The oil gives it a permanent shine while allowing the users hands to slip effortlessly up and down the staff, which is required for proper technique.
The pictures are generic, and your staff will be unique. The last picture is shown of purpleheart in its unoiled state to show the natural color of the wood.
