This listing is for Octagonal Hickory short jo staffs. The length of this particular staff is 48". Its width from flat surface to opposite flat surface is 1 inch.
These staffs are either solid wood or made with laminated construction depending on the quality of wood, and specific wood options available. Hickory is the hardest available North American wood. Hickory prevents this Jo from having almost any wobble or flex and has a great sturdy feel. These staffs are extremely solid and are able to be used for all Jo Staff uses.
Jo Staffs are a traditional Okinawan training tool used in Kobudo style martial arts, But are also perfect for outdoor use such as hiking.
The octagonal style design feels EXTREMELY natural in the hands and is the ultimate for an outdoor use staff... they feel solid when gripping. It is preferred by many martial artists because of this quality of the surfaces and is excellent for wilderness hiking for the same reason. They are also excellent for kata and strength training in the martial arts.
It is finished with several coats of linseed and beeswax oil, which gives it a permanent shine and protective layer while allowing the users hands to slip effortlessly up and down the staff, which is required for proper technique.
