This listing is for Un-tapered Purpleheart Bo Staffs. The Bo Staff is a traditional Okinawan wooden training tool used in many Kobudo style martial arts systems. These particular staffs range 60" to 72".
The materials consist of Purpleheart wood which is one of the most beautiful exotic woods. Its hardness is comparable to hickory and has a beautiful natural dark purple color.
Purpleheart, like all woods, can vary in density. I have marked staffs that are light weight or medium weight in the options available. Medium and lighter weight staffs are best for solo use or speed training, where the standard version is acceptable for contact uses.
1" full size staffs are chosen for solo use, speed training, and tournaments. If you have need of a contact staff, please purchase one of the wider varieties. These staffs are of a medium weight.
1" 60 Inch staffs are typically made with stronger wood, because these function as a jo staff and are therefore more often used for contact purposes. Unless otherwise stated, these staffs are contact grade weight. Medium weight 60" staffs again are best for speed and solo use.
1",1/8" Staffs are a good all-around mix of speed and durability. Made from heavy wood for contact purposes.
1,1/4" Are the sturdiest staffs available. Due to their width, they are slower than the other two options and are not recommended for speed training, but are great for weight training, and heavier uses.
The pictures shown are generic in nature and each staff is unique. The staffs are shown in both their oiled and unoiled form, to show the beautiful natural color of Purpleheart; when oiled, Purpleheart takes on a dark purple color.
These staffs may be made from laminated construction or solid hardwood construction depending on wood availability and quality of materials available.
Each is finished with several coats of linseed and beeswax oil, which causes the purpleheart to have a rich dark purple color. The oil gives it a permanent shine while allowing the users hands to slip effortlessly up and down the staff, which is required for proper technique.
