Bo Staffs are a traditional Martial arts training tool used in Kobudo style systems. Bo Staffs are also synonymous with the quarterstaffs of Europe. Bo staffs can come in many widths. These staffs have a constant 1,1/4" in diameter throughout its length, making these very similar to traditional European Quarterstaffs. Bo staffs can also come in thinner varieties and if you want one in a thinner size for more speed and technique, please check my other listings.

These staffs range from a full 6 foot or 72" length to 60"

Hickory is the hardest available North American Hardwood and is the best wood for martial arts weapons. In particular these staffs are made from beautiful southern shagbark hickory which is amongst the strongest hickory species and is cherished for its impact qualities. They are fully functional and can be used for any hiking or martial arts use. These staffs have a heavier feel then the thinner staffs. If you would like the same thickness but want more maneuverability, please check out our Tapered 1.25 Hickory Staff Listing for the same product thickness. The tapered variety is more traditionally used in martial arts due to less mass at the ends which allows more speed.  These untapered staffs by far are the strongest and heaviest due to their size.

These staffs are made from two laminations or pieces of hickory. The different laminations of wood make these staffs stronger as the different grain orientations reinforce each other, and the glue joint is permanent and stronger than the actual grain of the wood itself. The lamination also serves the purpose of keeping the wood straight, and it will resist warping more than solid hardwood.

For most of these listings I have added a weight range. These staffs can vary considerably in weight, and this type of staff has many uses ranging from hiking to full contact. I have added the weights for this listings to help with choosing the staff that is right for you.

Staffs iin the 2lbs 5oz or less are best for non contact or solo or hiking uses. They will still most likely be still far superior to most storebought staffs made of other inferior hardwoods. These staffs still have a stury feel, inspiring confidence in practice or during hiking, however they are much more suitable for extended use and carrying for longer periods of time, and are a very happy medium between both. I highly recommend these staffs for hiking, or if you still want a good balance between building muscle and speed for these wider staffs in martial arts uses. I do not recommend these for the heaviest dojo contact uses.

*For the Discounted Staffs, these staffs may have some character marks or places where there was minor water discoloration from inside the tree. All the staffs labeled discounted presently only have asthetic discolorations, and are all very stury.

*For the staffs that are heavier weights which is between 2lbs 6 to 13 ounces, these staffs are all appropriate for contact purposes.

If you are looking for heavy hickory staffs which will not be used for contact, please check out our discounted hickory collection

Hickory comes in two colors. Light sapwood, and light brown to darker brown heartwood. Some staffs have different colors of hickory laminated together. This is called Calico Hickory, and you commonly see it in hard wood hickory floors for extra beauty. As each staff is completely unique, the colors and patterns in the wood is different for each staff. The differences in color is purely aesthetic in nature.

Each staff is finished by applying several coats of Linseed and Beeswax oil and sanded to a fine finish, which gives it a permanent shine and and amazing feel in the which allows the hands to slip effortlessly up and down the staff.
